Curso Inglés is an educational app in the language learning genre that focuses on helping Spanish speakers learn English. I found this app on Google Play a few months ago when I was looking for something different from the bigger platforms. It launched back in 2023 and you can download it for free on both Google Play and the App Store. I think it has over 100,000 installs now, which is decent for a niche app. No registration is required to start using it, which I really liked. There are some in app purchases for extra lessons and occasionally ads pop up, but they are not too annoying. The app focuses on grammar and vocabulary through structured lessons, and it feels like a solid companion for beginners.

Using the app is pretty straightforward. You open it and pick a lesson based on what you want to study, like verb tenses or common phrases. Each lesson has a short explanation followed by exercises where you fill in blanks or match words. My tip is to repeat each lesson three times before moving on, because the repetition really sticks in your memory. I also use the progress tracker to see which topics I am weak at. The app has a simple interface without too many distractions, so it is easy to just open and start learning. I usually spend about 15 minutes per day on it while commuting.

Compared to apps like Duolingo, Curso Inglés feels more serious and less game like. Duolingo is fun but sometimes I just want to focus on grammar without cartoon characters. Curso Inglés gives you direct explanations and practice without any frills. Another similar app is Babbel, but that one costs a lot more per month. With Curso Inglés you get a lot of content for a smaller price. I chose it because it is simple, affordable, and made specifically for Spanish speakers. The translations are accurate and the examples are based on real conversations. It is not perfect, but for daily practice it works well for me.

features

  • 📘 The main function is structured grammar lessons. You get clear explanations followed by exercises. It covers tenses, prepositions, and sentence structure. Compared to Duolingo, which uses gamified exercises, Curso Inglés feels more like a textbook approach that helps you understand rules deeply.
  • 📘 Vocabulary building with daily word sets. You learn common words grouped by topics like food, travel, and work. The app uses flashcards and matching games. Babbel has similar features but charges a subscription. Curso Inglés gives you this with fewer restrictions in the free version.
  • 📘 Offline mode lets you download lessons. This is great when I have no internet. You just download the lesson at home and practice anywhere. Most big apps require internet for full functionality. This standalone ability makes it reliable for commuters or people with limited data.
  • 📘 Progress tracking with statistics. You see how many lessons you completed and your accuracy rate. It helps me set goals. Busuu has a similar feature but you need a premium account. Here it is available for free users too.

pros

  • 😊 The app is very affordable. The one time purchase for full access costs less than a month of Babbel or Rosetta Stone. You get lifetime content without recurring payments. This makes it a good budget friendly choice for serious learners.
  • 😊 No unnecessary games or distracting animations. I can focus on learning without feeling like I am wasting time. Some apps like Memrise have lots of extras that slow me down. Curso Inglés keeps it simple and efficient.
  • 😊 It is tailored for Spanish speakers. All explanations are in Spanish, so I understand grammar concepts quickly. General English apps might not have this targeted approach, which reduces confusion for beginners.

cons

  • 😤 The app does not have speaking practice. For pronunciation I have to use another tool like ELSA Speak. Duolingo has speech recognition, which helps a lot. This is a missing feature for improving spoken English.
  • 😤 The interface looks dated. Some icons are not high resolution and the font could be modernized. Compared to slick apps like Busuu, it feels a bit old fashioned, but it is functional.
