Google Earth is a map app designed to help you explore the world from your phone. I first heard about it years ago and finally decided to download it from Google Play. It is free to install, and you do not need to register to use the basic features. The app has millions of downloads, and it works on both Google Play and the App Store. When I open it, I can see satellite images of almost any place on the planet. You can zoom into streets, look at mountains, or even check out the ocean. There are some in app purchases if you want extra features, but I never bought anything. I just use the free version, and it works fine.

Using Google Earth is pretty simple. You just search for a place, and the app flies you there. I like to use it before I travel to check out hotels and neighborhoods. A good tip is to use the Street View feature by dragging the little person icon onto the map. That gives you a real look at the ground level. Also, you can use the measure tool to see how far places are from each other. I sometimes use the 3D buildings mode, which makes cities look really cool. It is fun to just scroll around and see new places I have never been. The app is smooth and fast on my phone, and I never had it crash.

Compared to other map apps, Google Earth has a more exciting feel. Google Maps is great for directions, but it does not give you that full 3D view of the world. I use both, but for just looking around and exploring, Google Earth is the winner. The app feels like a toy for adults, and I always find something new. It is not the best for turn by turn navigation, but for learning about places, it is better than anything else I tried. I recommend it to my friends who love travel or geography. It is a simple and fun app that I keep on my home screen.

features

  • 🌍 3D view of the whole planet: You can spin the Earth and zoom into any spot. No other map app on Google Play gives you this kind of free global view. Google Maps has a flat map, but Earth makes it feel real.
  • 🏙️ Street View integration: You can drop the little guy onto streets and look around. It is perfect for checking out a place before you go. I use it to see if a restaurant looks nice from the outside. Maps has this too, but it is easier to use here.
  • 📏 Measure distances: I like to use the ruler tool to see how far I would walk. It is great for planning trips. You can measure from one city to another or just across a park. This feature is simple and works better than most other apps I tried.
  • 🛰️ Satellite history: You can look at old satellite images of places. I saw how my town changed over ten years. It is really interesting and something you cannot find in similar apps like MapQuest or even Google Maps.

pros

  • 👍 It is totally free for most things: No need to pay to see the world. Many similar map apps hide features, but here you get everything for free from Google Play.
  • 👍 Easy to use: The interface is clean, and you can find things fast. Even my dad, who is not good with tech, can use it. It is more friendly than apps like NASA Worldview.
  • 👍 Constant updates: Google keeps making it better. The images are always fresh, so you see recent stuff. That is a big plus over some older map apps that still look outdated.

cons

  • 🔧 Needs internet for most features: You cannot load new areas offline. Google Maps lets you save maps for offline, so this is a bit behind.
  • 🔧 Battery drain: It eats up my phone battery fast, especially in 3D mode. Other apps like OsmAnd are less heavy on power.
  • 🔧 No real directions: You cannot get turn by turn navigation here. For that, you need to switch to another app, which is annoying.
