U-Haul is a utility app designed to help you manage moving and storage rentals directly from your phone. I first downloaded it from Google Play a couple of years ago when I was planning a cross-town move. The app is free to install, and you don't need to register to browse equipment, but you will need an account to reserve trucks or storage units. It has over 1 million downloads on the Google Play store, and it is also available on the App Store. Like many rental apps, it includes in-app features like roadside assistance and insurance add-ons, but there are no annoying ads popping up while you use it. The main goal of the app is to save you time by letting you handle everything from checking truck sizes to signing contracts on your phone.

Using the U-Haul app is pretty straightforward. When I need a truck, I just open it, enter my pickup location and dates, and the app shows available options nearby. One tip I learned is to check the “Move Calculator” feature before booking — it tells you what size truck you need based on your home size, which saved me from renting a huge truck for a small apartment. The app also lets you add equipment like furniture pads and dollies directly to your reservation. I like that you can modify or cancel bookings without calling customer service. For storage, the map feature shows facilities near your route, which is handy when you are moving long distance. The checkout process is quick, and payments are saved securely, so repeat rentals take just a few taps.

Compared to similar moving apps like Budget Truck Rental or Penske, U-Haul stands out because of how many locations it has. I chose U-Haul over Penske because there was a U-Haul center just two blocks from my old place, making pickup and drop-off super easy. The app also offers 24/7 check-in for after-hours returns, which Budget does not have in many cities. However, I have noticed the U-Haul app can sometimes be slower than Penske's when loading truck availability, but the overall feature set is richer. For someone moving frequently or storing items, this app feels more complete. I have recommended it to friends who prefer handling everything from their phone rather than waiting on the phone with a rental office. It is not perfect, but for daily moving tasks, it gets the job done without extra hassle.

features

  • 📦 Reserve trucks, trailers, and storage units in one place. Unlike Penske where you have to call for certain equipment, U-Haul lets you book everything from a 10-foot truck to a climate-controlled unit directly in the app.
  • 🗺️ Real-time inventory and location maps. The app shows exact truck availability at nearby centers, while Budget often only displays vague “in stock” messages. This helps you plan pickups more accurately.
  • 📋 Digital check-in and after-hours returns. You can upload your driver's license and complete rental forms without visiting an office, which saves time compared to many competitors that still require paper signatures.
  • 📊 Move Calculator and cost estimator. This tool recommends truck size based on your home details, a feature I have not seen in Penske's app. It helps avoid renting a vehicle that is too big or too small.

pros

  • 👍 Large network of locations makes pickup and drop-off convenient almost anywhere. U-Haul has many more neighborhood centers than Budget or Penske, so I rarely drive far.
  • 👍 Easy reservation management. Modifying or canceling bookings is simple without calling support, which is smoother than Budget's app where changes often require a phone call.
  • 👍 Reliable equipment tracking. The app updates truck availability in real time, so I know exactly what is ready when I arrive.
  • 👍 Helpful moving guides built in. Tips on packing and loading are available right in the app, adding extra value compared to simpler competitors.

cons

  • 👎 App can be slow during peak hours. Loading truck options sometimes takes longer than Penske's app, which feels outdated.
  • 👎 Customer chat feature could be improved. Responses are slow at night, while Budget's chat is faster for simple questions.
  • 👎 Map loading errors occasionally occur. I have seen blank maps when searching for storage facilities, a bug that needs fixing.
